Module summaryThis module examines the importance of physical activity to benefit health and well-being. The module covers definitions of physical activity and recommendations for different populations by national (Chief Medical Office, UK) and Global (World Health Organisation) health bodies. Students will learn about impact of the environment (space and communities) on physical activity and consider concepts such as cultural tailoring of physical activity and the ableist notion of physical activity. Examining the use of the growth of wearables and technology (e.g., Fitbits, Ora rings) we consider how to measure physical activity and sedentary behaviour. Finally, this module investigates how to design, and measure the impact of physical activity programmes for specific populations throughout the life and health span.
ObjectivesThis module investigates the concept of physical activity, key influencers on physical activity patterns, and how to measure physical activity. The module then investigates and evaluates the effects of interventions to increase physical activity at the community/population level rather than the individual level. We consider physical activity throughout the life and health span.
On completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Define and outline the concepts of physical activity and sedentary behaviour and their measurement;
2. Identify and describe aspects of culture and the environment and their effect on physical activity patterns;
3. Identify and evaluate techniques to measure physical activity and sedentary behaviour;
4. Design, communicate and evaluate a programme to increase physical activity or decreases sedentary behaviour.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback- Students' progress will be monitored via guide questions used for online sessions, and formative worksheets associated with labs and lectures which students peer mark and discuss with demonstrators.
- A scheduled tutorial is timetables for students to present their programme ideas based on PICOS format and tutor to give feedback.
All staff offer 2 hour consultation hours /week as a minimum for other opportunities for formative feedback
- Weekly MCQ will be used to provide feedback on understanding.
- Padlet activities used to lectures to share and comment on ideas/information for programme development.
