Pre-requisite qualifications
Some basic proficiency in Arabic language at lower intermediate level, including familiarity with the Arabic alphabet and the basics of Arabic language convention. An entry test will be required to assess proficiency.This module is mutually exclusive with

Module summary
This module is offered as a Discovery module for undergraduate students. On completion of this module you will be able to gain an understanding of the language syntax and the culture of the Arabic speaking countries, where the language is spoken. The module will enable you to deal with and understand short texts, respond appropriately in everyday situations, collect information from short texts in the target language, write limited pieces of work in the target language, express themselves using limited vocabulary and formulaic expressions and use the target language in a limited number of contexts..Objectives
The aim of this module is to progress students from beginners level (A1 according to the CEFR scale) to the intermediate level (A2 according to the CEFR scale) in the four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). The module will also help in raising awareness of the linguistic and cultural differences between Arabic and English.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
- understand simple instructions
- respond appropriately in everyday situations
- collect information from short texts in the target language
- write limited pieces of work in the target language
- express themselves using limited vocabulary and formulaic expressions and use the target language in a limited number of contexts so that it can be understood by a sympathetic native speaker.
- students will also develop an understanding of the structure of the language and the culture of the countries where the target language is spoken.
- understand the key points of clear typical exchange on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
Skills outcomes
1. Demonstrate a good awareness of the contextual use of Arabic grammar.
2. Demonstrate the relevant skills in translating from and into Arabic.
3. Be able to deal with complex and complicated Arabic sentence structure at the intermediate level.
4. Demonstrate the ability to converse confidently at the intermediate level.
5. Demonstrate a confident use of practical skills in Arabic: reading, writing, speaking and listening.
6. Cultural awareness
Syllabus
1. Emphasis on the Interactive communication language learning approach; reading, writing, listening and speaking skills will be developed by means of role-play, pair and group discussion.
2. In grammar the student will be introduced to the following issues:
Case marking, adverbs, noun-adjective phrase, the gerund, nominal sentence and fronted predicate, verb tenses, ordinal and cardinal numbers, the comparative and superlative, connectors, and Idhafa; structure. Collocation of adjectives, adverbial phrases of time, place and frequency including word order, adjectives vs adverbs, adverbial phrases, modals.
