Module summary

This module offers you the opportunity to progress from the level of a total beginner to lower intermediate level (half a GCSE) in the four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). On completion of this module you will be able to understand simple instructions, respond appropriately in everyday situations, express yourself using limited vocabulary and formulaic expressions and use the target language in a limited number of contexts so that it can be understood by a sympathetic native speaker. You will also develop an understanding of the structure of the language and the culture of the countries where the target language is spoken.

Objectives

The module aims to equip students with a basic grounding in Arabic grammar. It will introduce students to Arabic morphology and syntax. Basic grammatical structures will be covered and vocabulary will be built up in key areas of everyday communication. Additionally, the main focus will be on reading writing, speaking and listening. It aims to equip students with tools on how to read and write basic Arabic sentences and paragraphs.

Learning outcomes
On the completion of this module students should have acquired a basic knowledge in writing and reading Arabic. They would also be able to identify the basic elements of Arabic grammar. Students will also be able, with the aid of the dictionary, to read basic Arabic texts and hold basic Arabic conversations.

Skills outcomes
On the completion of this module students will be able to understand Arabic alphabets, Arabic grammatical elements, and accumulate variety of vocabulary to help them read and comprehend basic texts. Students will also be able to translate basic sentences from and into Arabic.


Syllabus

This module will introduce basic grammatical concepts and more syntactic constructions, as well as continuing to expand students' vocabulary in a variety of lexical fields. A wide range of grammatical topics will be covered, as well as wide range of basic texts for reading. Students will also be introduced to writing basic Arabic sentences and paragraphs.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students' progress will be monitored through language coursework, oral presentations and written examination in May/June.
