Module summary
You will undertake a placement or piece of commissioned project work, which may involve collaboration with a cultural sector partner. By the end of the module, you will have critically reflected on your placement or project experience. You will do this through putting it in the wider contexts of policy, funders and funding streams and the mission and structure of the organizational contexts within which you are working.Through horizon scanning and identifying future trends, the module will enable you to understand your placement project and personal career planning within longer term shifts and changes within the cultural sector. A key ethos of the module is to support your personal and professional development and you will work towards identifying the contributions you want to make to the sector as a way of building a sustainable long-term career.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able...1) To support students to develop their personal and professional practice via placements and project work.
2) To critically reflect on the organizational and policy contexts within which the placement or project sits.
3) To draw on a variety of approaches to theorising organizations and policy as a way of understanding professional roles.
4) To explore different ways of understanding the cultural sector and to undertake horizon scanning exercises.
5) To use the experience of the placement, and understanding of the wider contexts of the sector, to develop a personal and professional development plan.

Syllabus
Reflective thinking: Making the most of your placement (introducing the links between policy, organization and personal and professional development; introduce assessment approaches, thinking through professional ethics in the workplace)
Contextualising placements: Developing approaches to organizational structures in the cultural sector and further situating students’ personal and professional development via the course and module.
Exploring professional practice: Gaining insights on career paths, skills and experiences available in the cultural sector via a series of invited speakers examining different aspects of professional work practice. Examples could include building resilience in the artist-led sector; working with volunteers; socially engaged museum practice; working with collections; developing grant funding applications.
Supporting assignments: In-class support and tutorials will tailor approaches to the module coursework, offering students both peer-to-peer and lecturer-led support.
Networking and professionally presenting your work: The module will build in opportunities to develop skills in professional presentation via a student presentation of placement activity; this may take one of several forms – oral, written, visual, or peer-to-peer presentation. Opportunities for professional network building will also be supplied, connecting students with wider professional sectoral networks.

Private study
Independent learning will happen through the placement or project work.The student will spend 30 hours (minimum) on placement or on a specific assigned project.
Alongside the placement, in terms of private study, students will produce a reflective placement report, an essay and a professional development plan which will be submitted for their assessment.
The essay addresses key conceptual themes emerging from their placement activities in an academic context and will require extensive background reading. (80)
The reflective report will include mapping work, to visualize how their role relates to organizations as well as the identification of key policy drivers for their role and the project in which they are placed. (80)
A personal and professional development plan maps future career plans strategically. (50)
Further, in preparation for taught sessions, reading and/or professional development tasks will also be undertaken in advance of each taught session. (42)
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
The monitoring of student progress will be done in a number of ways.The first is via the seminars where any emerging issues can be identified.
The second is via a mid-point one to one tutorial.
The third is via their placement report presentation, progress of which will be reviewed in the tutorial.
The module lectures and seminars are designed to consistently build the knowledge and skills necessary for the formal assignment. There are opportunities to present on all key aspects of the assignment through a workshop structure. There will be specifically designed formative workshops – via student presentations – to help students prepare for the assessments. There is also a personal tutorial to give tailored one to one support on both personal and professional development plans and module assessment.

Presentation - To present on ideas for the report for formative feedback Reflective placement report (LO1) The report will include a map of how their placement fits in the organizational context and identify relevant policy drivers. (LO2) Documentation of key issues faced on placement, theorising/conceptualising themes from placement experience will be included. (LO3) The report will also feature a personal and professional development plan. (LO4)
