Objectives

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have a basic knowledge and understanding of the physiological mechanisms concerned with:
- gastrointestinal physiology including mechanisms of absorption, secretion and motility and the neuro-hormonal mechanisms controlling these functions;
- the mechanisms of renal solute and water handling underlying the maintenance of body fluid composition and volume and the mechanisms by which the pH of the body fluids is maintained (acid base physiology).

Syllabus

The syllabus covers the following topics:
- Anatomy of the GI tract
- Neural and hormonal regulation of GI tract function
- Motility and secretions of the GI tract and associated organs
- Mechanisms of digestion and absorption
- Anatomy of the kidney and urinary tract
- Glomerular filtration and its regulation
- Tubular processing of the filtrate to produce urine
- Role of the kidney in the homeostasis of salt and other solutes, water, and acid-base balance.
