Module summary

This module will develop the intellectual research skills to support the practical research being carried out in the parallel projects that students are undertaking, and to prepare them for a career in a research environment.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able
- To expose students to a range of techniques and technologies that are used in the modern biosciences.
- To develop critical analysis of published research.
- To expose students to current research trends in the biosciences and to leading researchers in the field.

Learning outcomes
Students will
- Be able to summarise and evaluate current research trends in the field;
- Be able to critically analyse and present recent research and explain it to others;
- Be able to identify important ideas and significance of published findings;
- Be able to discuss the impact of your work and present it to different audiences;
- Be aware of a range of modern research techniques and approaches, and be able to discuss when they would be applicable, and their strengths and weaknesses.

Skills outcomes
Critical analysis, group discussion, impact evaluation, societal impact and ethics.


Syllabus

Students will attend a range of research seminars delivered by external speakers in the Faculty of Biological Sciences that are relevant to their programme of study. Students will present at and attend journal clubs that occur in the school and also a specific set of student led journal club presentations using research papers from the external speakers. Students will attend a number of tutorials that will introduce aspects of research that includes, research techniques, data handling, public engagement and ethics through group discussions. Students will attend sessions pertaining to modern research techniques and the settings in which they may be used.

Private study

Students will spend time researching literature, reading scientific papers, evaluating the impact of data and preparing for journal club presentations and working through the pre-tutorial resources.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Attendance at journal club sessions and seminars will be monitored, and their progress monitored through their performance in their presentations during the module.

Students will be required to maintain a log of notes for each research seminar and identify if/how issues arising from the journal club were addressed by the speaker. They will be required to submit these for assessment.
