Module summary

The chemical engineering sector is at the forefront of innovation developing solutions for some of today’s most important problems, such as food security and supply, the green energy revolution, environmental remediation and recovery, responsible manufacturing, and water scarcity and pollution. Students will first develop an understanding of innovation before undertaking an independent research project. The research project involves students demonstrating their independent critical thinking/ability to solve an open-ended problem, their ability to collect and analyse research data, as well as being able to contextualize their research findings in regards to chemical engineering innovation.

Objectives

1. To broaden the knowledge of students through a seminar series on chemical engineering innovation which focuses on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the UN.
2. To provide students with the tools and facilities to scope out a research problem, develop an original research hypothesis and undertake an independent research study.
3. Provide opportunity for students to demonstrate their higher cognitive abilities when working on an open-ended problem.
4. To develop communication skills (verbal/written) such that students are comfortable presenting to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Learning outcomes
1. Evaluate the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations and demonstrate how the research satisfies one or more SDGs.
2. To critically review scientific literature and develop a research hypothesis that can be scrutinized.
3. Create a research plan and undertake an original and independent study.
4. Critically analyse research data and demonstrate an ability to scientifically discuss research findings.
5. Demonstrate leadership in health and safety working practices.
6. Communicate research findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.


Syllabus

1. Students will be educated on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals as published by the United Nations. The contributions made by chemical engineers to achieve these goals will be discussed by leading academics and industrialists invited to share their own examples of how the chemical engineering sector innovates to become more sustainable.
2. Students will broaden their knowledge of chemical engineering innovation by attending a seminar series covering topics such as: i) process intensification; ii) alternative and clean energy systems; iii) nano technology and nanomaterials; iv) manufacturing automation (AI) and big data; v) ground and groundwater remediation; vi) alternative fuels; and vii) advanced pharmaceuticals.
3. Using the resources available through the University, students (in consultation with their supervisor) will develop their own professional skills training program (literature searching, communication skills, data analysis etc.). The recommended training time is 10 hrs.
4. Conduct an original and independent research study which requires: i) the review of scientific literature to develop a research hypothesis; ii) familiarization with research methods; iii) project planning and progress monitoring; iv) collection and analysis of research data; v) critical assessment of research findings; vi) presentation of research to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Private study

Students will be expected to develop their subject knowledge by reading and critically evaluating journal papers.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will submit weekly research updates to their research team and attend meetings where they will receive feedback.
