Module summary

This module will examine some fundamental aspects of batch processes with relevance to the production of speciality chemical products. The general principles elucidated are applicable to the manufacture of many speciality fine-chemicals such as pharmaceuticals, dyes and pigments, agrochemicals and polymers via batch processes.

Objectives

To explore and explain fundamental aspects of batch processes with relevance to the production of speciality chemical-products. The general principles elucidated are applicable to the manufacture of many speciality fine-chemicals such as pharmaceuticals, dyes and pigments, agrochemicals and polymers via batch processes. To illustrate the most important differences and contrasts between continuous and batch processes and explain the consequences of these differences.

Learning outcomes
- To have gained an understanding of the reasons for selecting a batch process rather that a continuous process.
- To have gained an appreciation of the methods employed for designing batch processes.
- To have gained an ability to formulate simple mathematical models to describe chemical reaction kinetics in batch and semi-batch reactors and to solve these using MATLAB or an equivalent method.
- To have gained an understanding of the properties of solvents and their impact on reaction processes.
- To have gained an appreciation of the issue of scheduling batch processes and the methods that can be used to solve scheduling problems.
- To have developed an understanding of batch-wise liquid-liquid separations, batch distillation and batch crystallisation.


Syllabus

Introduction:
- Definition of 'batch process', reasons for selecting a batch rather than a continuous process.
- Similarities and differences between the design of batch and continuous processes.
- Examples of typical batch processes and identification of the component unit operations.

Operations in Batch Reactors:
- Fundamentals of process development in batch reactors: approaches based on understanding physical-chemistry aspects of the process.
- Reaction medium: selection of solvent.
- Influence of agitation and mixing in the operation of batch reactors.
- Heterogeneous versus homogeneous reaction environments.
- Control of heat flow in batch reactors.

Operations for Reaction Workup:
- Liquid-liquid separation: issues of heterogeneous liquids, miscibility and control by adjustment of pH.
- Aspects of batch distillation: solvent exchange, drying and product purification.

Operations for Solid Particle Formation:
- Methods for promoting crystallisation.
- Induction of nucleation: addition of seed crystals.
- Control of de-supersaturation.

Scheduling of Batch Processes:
- Particular features of batch processes with respect to scheduling.
- Description of the scheduling problem.
- Implications of scheduling for batch process design.

Private study
