Module summary

This module will build upon the introduction to the principles of chemistry introduced in CHEM1101 and CHEM1201 to provide students with an appreciation of a wide variety of key areas of chemistry including atmospheric chemistry, biological chemistry, materials chemistry and medicinal chemistry. The module will expose how scientific breakthroughs are reported in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students will have an understanding of the breadth of the discipline of chemistry after a detailed introduction to a range of specialist areas of chemistry including materials chemistry, colour chemistry and biological chemistry. The module will be taught in parallel with related core material in CHEM1101 and CHEM1201.

Learning outcomes
Students will be able to explain and apply the principles of a range of chemical fields for example but not limited to:

1. Medicinal Chemistry
2. Biological Chemistry
3. Complex materials
4. States of matter beyond gas, liquid and solid.
5. The chemistry and properties of dyes
6. Atmospheric chemistry
7. Polymer chemistry
Students will be able to engage with a research paper, find relevant resources online, and demonstrate their understanding of a topic through writing.

Syllabus

- Medicinal Chemistry - introduction
- Biological Chemistry – introduction to biopolymers, natural products and the chemical basis of molecular biology
- Complex Materials
- Soft matter
- Colour Chemistry
- Atmospheric Chemistry
- Polymer Chemistry

Students will complete a 1500-word essay describing a research paper in the area of one of the topics.
