Module summary

The module is designed to provide students with educational resources in specific areas of the subject (organic, inorganic and physical chemistry) which students taking MSc Chemistry whose first degree was not in Leeds may have not encountered on their own undergraduate programme. The topics chosen are intended to provide background for topics available in the Advanced Topics portfolio at level 5M. Students will choose two topics. For each topic, online and/or written learning resources are provided and students complete coursework (written or online) for which feedback will be provided.This module is not available to students who have gained a Bsc in Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Leeds.

Objectives

To provide students with educational resources in specific areas of the subject (organic, inorganic and physical chemistry) which are appropriate to level 3 of an undergraduate programme, but which students taking MSc chemistry whose first degree was not in Leeds may have not encountered on their own undergraduate programme. The topics chose are intended to provide background for topics available in the Advanced Topics portfolio at level 5M.

Learning outcomes
1. Students will improve their skills in independent study;
2. Students will enhance their background knowledge in areas of the subject which may include: chemical bonding, molecular self-organization, chemical kinetics, organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, molecular symmetry, organometallic chemistry, solid-state inorganic chemistry, analytical and atmospheric chemistry;
3. Students will develop improved problem-solving skills in some of these areas.

Syllabus

Students will choose two topics from a list which may include: chemical bonding, molecular self-organization, chemical kinetics, organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, molecular symmetry, organometallic chemistry, solid-state inorganic chemistry, analytical and atmospheric chemistry. The syllabus from each topic will include a selection of material which is also taught on level 3 modules for Chemistry undergraduate students in Leeds.
