Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should:
1. have an appreciation of literature background to an important problem in their chosen field;
2. be able to formulate hypotheses to be tested experimentally;
3. keep an accurate, formal record of research performed;
4. be able to plan new experiments in the light of earlier results;
5. apply key methods in appropriate scientific technology for the investigation of important problems and/or develop new methodology;
6. be able to interpret experimental data and to develop new models on the basis of these experiments;
7. disseminate research results both orally, and as a written research paper, technical report or thesis format;
8. to develop generic transferable skills for personal development.
Syllabus
An ongoing programme of transferrable skills development will begin prior to the project. This will include:
1. Reading, writing and presenting in a scientific context.
2. Career development; applying for a PhD or job.
Students will be given a list of potential research projects of relevance to their MSc. Projects will be in the following areas:
Chemical Biology and Drug Design
Polymers, Colorants and Fine Chemicals
Atmospheric and Planetary Chemistry
Computational Chemistry and Chemical Physics
Crystallisation and Directed Assembly
Process Research and Development
