Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to ...

a) draw up a workplan, identifying aims and objectives achievable within the time available;
b) understand how to conduct independent research working within a constrained timescale;
c) plan and execute a short-term research programme;
d) analyse and discuss their results and draw appropriate conclusions;
e) prepare a dissertation on their work;
f) communicate technical information to a non-expert audience.

Learning outcomes
1. Develop a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of one aspect of civil engineering including the underlying principles and an awareness of the limitations of current practices and potential future developments within a chosen field of research.
2. Ability to critically evaluate appropriate literature and data to identify a current research gap and be able to analyse research outcomes and construct logical arguments towards addressing these gaps.
3. Understand the value of and need for appropriate mathematical and statistical methods and where appropriate mathematical and computational modelling techniques and how to apply these correctly when solving engineering problems
4. Understand principles and concepts from other engineering disciplines and from outside engineering and be able to apply these appropriately within a chosen area of civil engineering research.
5. Further develop the ability to recognise where data or information is incomplete, evaluate the impact on research outcomes and use appropriate experimental or theoretical methods to mitigate
6. Ability to develop and apply relevant practical and laboratory skills to an area of civil engineering research as appropriate for their project.
7. Develop knowledge of the legal and contractual issues particularly with respect to Health and Safety procedural requirements in laboratory and field based research.
8. Further develop written and oral communication skills and in particular the ability to present research to technical and non-technical audiences.
9. Take responsibility for planning and carrying out a programme of research and make appropriate adjustments to schedules and methodologies on an on-going basis.
