Objectives

This module is designed to introduce you to media policy and provide you with the tools to analyse current policy issues and contribute to policy debates. You will learn about the historical development of press, broadcasting and internet policy, the different values and visions of media at stake in media policy, and how the contemporary policymaking process works. You will then examine a range of contested issues in key policy areas that are being considered by media policymakers today.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of media policy and the forces that shape it.
2. Explain how media policy and regulation impacts on the media industries
3. Evaluate contemporary policy developments and debates and formulate policy recommendations


Syllabus

This module examines the cultural and political implications of media policy and its significance for the media industries. The module will outline the historical development of press, broadcasting and internet policy, identifying the competing values at stake in media policy and the different visions of media it promotes. We will then examine a range of contested issues in key policy areas that are being considered by media policymakers today. The discussions of these topics will be supported by an analysis of how the policymaking process works.
