Module summary

This module is designed tobring the theory and practice of photography together, through both research and creative experimentation, alongside critical and reflective writing on the subject. This will prepare students for more independent working at level 3 -the Photography Project module, in particular.Together with study of the principles of photographic practice, history and theory, students will develop their own technical knowledge and creative approachesto the medium, through the development of a negotiated photography project.

Objectives

The module aims to give students experience of developing their own self-defined photography project, informed by relevant research, photography theoryand creative experimentation, in preparation for final year project COMM3890 Photography Project. The module will cover: -Knowledgeof the history and theory of photography.-The relationships between critical ideas and photographic practice-The roleof practice as a research method-The importance of self-reflection and the critical analysis of practice-Development of creative and technical photography skills

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to:1. Demonstrate the ability to plan and execute a critically-informed photographyproject2. Situateand contextualise photography within critical themes, relevant theory, history and genre3. Use research methods and theory to underpin creative work4. Advance practical photography skills and use of technology5. Develop creative / experimental solutions and produce original outcomes.

Skills outcomes
Students will be able to further develop their practice-based skills in photography. Advanced Camera skills Post-production software –Photoshop and Lightroom. Photographic storytelling and presentation –books, websites, exhibitions

Syllabus

Indicative lecture content includes:-Critical approaches to photography-Reading and writing about photographs-Politics of photographic representation-Photography as a research method-Memory studiesand photography-Changing technologies and practices of imaging and their convergence-Philosophy and the ontology of photography-Use of creative practice to interrogate photography theory-Photography and the history of artAlongside the lecture programme themodule is underpinned with supervisor-basedtutorialsand workshops on creativepracticeapproaches.

Private study

Throughout the course of this module students will be engaged in practice-based tutorial exercises leading to the production of assessed creative practice. The period of private study will include independent photographic and contextual research (90 hours) and creative practice (82 hours) towards the submission of the reflective essay and portfolio.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

-Students are monitored through the bi-weekly group tutorials-Students bring work in forpeer and formative feedback -Students can send photography for review or book supervision meetings during office hours.
