Module summary

The module introduces students to innovative practice in contemporary fashion design. Students will explore the principles of creative fashion design through research, critical analysis and design thinking. Fashion concepts will be developed from a broad and diverse range of contemporary and historical sources. Current issues within the global fashion industry will be introduced and will inform the development of innovative design solutions addressing a range of market levels and future industry needs. Students will be encouraged to realise their creativity through a range of traditional and digital tools to build a solid foundation for the development of contemporary fashion design.

Objectives

The objectives of the module are to introduce practices, processes and strategies employed in communicating fashion design concepts, and to guide students to conduct independent lines of fashion research and enquiry in order to formulate creative and diverse solutions for contemporary fashion design.
This module will help students develop intellectual enquiry, critical analysis, design thinking, aesthetic responsiveness, and practical skills to establish the foundations of fashion design, and to support the exploration of a broad range of knowledge and skills in levels 2 and 3.

Learning outcomes
1. Appreciate the importance of collaboration in market research, brand and product analysis to inform the presentation of fashion concepts.
2. Conduct independent fashion research and analyse findings to inform the development of fashion concepts.
3. Demonstrate the development of a critical understanding of social, cultural, and global influences on a range of fashion contexts.
4. Articulate an informed rationale for fashion design decisions.
5. Produce a portfolio of fashion designs which demonstrates skills in hand and digital drawing and presentation techniques.

Syllabus

Indicative content covered in the module includes:
- An introduction to primary and secondary research and forecasting materials relevant to fashion design.
- An introduction to the fundamental distinctions between womenswear and menswear design.
- An introduction to the skills of digital and hand drawing and illustration relevant to fashion design using a variety of media.
- Introductory development of design concepts.
- Problem solving and solutions relating to design.
- The use of reflective, self-evaluation processes.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored during tutorials and practical sessions.
Students will receive verbal feedback during practical classes.
Students will also have the opportunity for mid-semester formative feedback (sem. 1 and 2), based on the learning objectives and levels of assessment for the module.
At the end of semester 1 and semester 2, student receive summative feedback on each semester’s work.
