Module summary

This module introduces the elementary principles of fashion production through an understanding of pattern cutting, garment cut, fit and construction using traditional and digital methodologies employed in industry. Students will gain technical understanding of how basic fashion garments are produced and will develop their understanding of technical terminology, which underpins their creative design practice. Using a range of traditional and digital technologies, the module explores the ways that fashion manufacturing is evolving to respond to global challenges. The module encourages students to be proactive in the pursuit of knowledge and technical proficiency.

Objectives

This module introduces students to the methodologies used in the development and manufacture of fashion products. Students will use traditional and digital tools to develop elementary skills in unstructured pattern making and garment construction, cut and fit. Students will develop a good working knowledge of industry-specific terminology, and an ability to analyse and interpret historic and contemporary fashion products’ construction, fit and cut. Through the production of prototype patterns, samples and specification drawing, students will develop their technical understanding of fashion products, to underpin their design practice.

Learning outcomes
1. Demonstrate basic technical skills in pattern cutting, specification drawing and its application
2. Demonstrate basic skills in the application of appropriate digital tools in garment production
3. Produce elementary samples that are competently executed and presented, fulfilling the requirements of a given brief
4. Demonstrate a basic understanding of how garments are manufactured and produced commercially
5. Demonstrate basic research skills in relation to garment shapes, styles and structures and place them within their historical context

Syllabus

Indicative content covered in the module includes:
- The translation of elementary 2D patterns and technical drawings to 3D samples and garments.
- Fashion construction methods used for different fabrics to understand the importance of fabric selection to product development in fashion design.
- Research and analysis of a range of garment styles, features, cut and construction
- Contextualisation of traditional and emerging production processes
- Technical knowledge at key stages in the development of fashion products and the impact that this has on garment quality.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will receive verbal feedback during practical classes and are given the opportunity for feedback on drafts of their journal and research & analysis work.
Students will also have the opportunity for mid-semester formative feedback (sem. 1 and 2), based on the learning objectives and levels of assessment for the module.
At the end of semester 1 and semester 2, student receive summative feedback on each semester’s work.
