Module summary
Through this module students will be introduced to textile design practices integral to the design and production of contemporary fashion. Current and future developments in textile design for fashion, associated technologies, materials and future industry directions and innovations are researched and critically appraised. Traditional and digital approaches are interrogated to support the development of a portfolio of experimental and final design solutions, responding to a research-led exploratory design brief. Objectives
This module is designed to deliver an overview of textiles processes from creative concept to fabric realisation both in the analogue and digital environments. When and where design opportunities are located within these traditional methods, and how they have been positioned in established and emerging digital technologies, will be explored. An important aspect of the module is the introduction to design research and analysis as a means of identifying clear design challenges within the context of a well-defined creative concept.Learning outcomes
1. To demonstrate a basic understanding of conventional textile production methods.
2. To demonstrate an awareness of how and where the key design tools of colour, texture and motifs are applied during the broader textile design process.
3. To demonstrate selection and evaluation of visual research to inform the translation of concepts to experimental practical outcomes.
4. To apply understanding of contemporary digital design tools within the textile design process and its portfolio presentation.
5. To demonstrate a basic understanding of the technical information important in accurate design communication.
Syllabus
The formal taught sessions will introduce how textiles materials are traditionally manufactured and identify key design opportunities within these technical processes. Studio based critiques will support understanding of the role of the designer within present-day creative design workflows. Technology demonstrations will support the development of design and production skills and the understanding of design software advantages and challenges.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Student progress will be monitored through group and one to one tutorials at set intervals during practical sessions, formative feedback will be provided at a suitable semester mid-point to support progress with the design collection specified in the module brief. For example, by encouraging a deeper understanding of clear and well-articulated design decisions and progressing design developments in line with both aesthetic ambition and recognition of technical opportunities. Methods of assessment
Coursework
