Module summary

This module introduces core digital knowledge and skills which are essential for innovative fashion design practice. Students will be introduced to the breadth of digital innovation within fashion and textile design including industry standard CAD software and developments in related technology such as VR and AR. The module will focus on the use of various contemporary 2D and 3D digital technologies for visual research, creative design development and the production of digital portfolios their digital creativity and flexibly apply diverse fashion design solutions.

Objectives

The objectives of this module are to help students to establish core digital skills and knowledge that are fundamental for all modules of the programme and to guide students to apply their skills and knowledge to effectively develop and visualise their creative thinking in a form of innovative design solutions. The use of various contemporary 2D & 3D technology in this module will enable the students to selectively and flexibly apply traditional and/or digital techniques to research, design and visualisation of fashion and textile projects.

Learning outcomes
1. Demonstrate fundamental skills for development of digital images (fashion illustration, technical flat and textiles).
2. Demonstrate an ability to effectively present the outcomes through creation of a digital portfolio.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the capacities of various software and competence in the use of appropriate software for generation of creative digital outcomes.
4. Evidence the application of digital technology research and knowledge within the context of a fashion and textile portfolio.


Syllabus

Indicative content covered in the module includes:
- Acquisition of fundamental knowledge and skills related to 2D and 3D digital technologies for creativity, and the advantages that different systems provide for fashion and textiles.
- Application of software to enable independent design research, fashion and textile design, and generation of a digital portfolio.
- Techniques for digital translation of trend information, colour and concept, to inform fashion and textile development.
- Digital development of mood boards, fashion illustrations, technical flats, tech pack, textile patterns and fashion & textile visualisations.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored at lectures, tutorials and practical sessions.
Students will receive verbal feedback during practical classes.
Students will also have the opportunity for mid-semester formative feedback (sem. 1 and 2), based on the learning objectives and levels of assessment for the module.
At the end of semester 1 and semester 2, student receive summative feedback on each semester’s work.
