Module summary
In this module, students are introduced to the relationship between materials, concepts and processes through creative practice and visual research. In particular drawing is introduced as a tool of visual analysis, interpretation and expression, alongside a variety of working methods, which will inform art and design practice throughout the course.Objectives
The objective of this module is to introduce students to a range of visual research methods, generative and iterative approaches to both ideas and material processes as ways of making and critically appraising art and design artefacts. The module provides a platform for the development of conceptual and practical skills which are an integral part of art and design practiceLearning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have provided evidence of being able to:
1. engage with a range of methods of visual research
2. develop appropriate strategies for making using the insights gained from these methods
3. demonstrate an understanding of the rationale for the chosen methods
4. identify and analyse conceptual and material contexts
Skills outcomes
Creative practice skills including 3D construction, sound, photography, painting, drawing, film and printmaking. The practice is informed by theory and academic research
Syllabus
Students are introduced to a range of processes including drawing, photography, printmaking, painting, sculpture and 3D construction, sound and lens-based media, and encouraged to consider the fitness for purpose of materials and processes for making artefacts. The scope and format of their work will be discussed. appropriate strategies for making will be explored as students engage with the work of artists and designers and identify contexts for their personal work.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
- Students’ creative practice work will be seen by their studio tutor every week during the practical sessions and students have opportunity for tutorial guidance- Students will have a mid-semester monitoring tutorial with written feedback on practice and a research and analysis file in progress.
- Peer–critique: there is a formal opportunity to view and comment on others’ work x 1.
