The aim of the module is to provide the students with an understanding and appreciation of the fundamental concepts and principles of Graphic and Communication Design, in particular the relationship between word and image. Students will learn essential skills in typography: type classification and identification; type design; typesetting; and managing font software. Students will learn the fundamental principles of layout, including how to master the design grid. The module will cover the key theories underpinning composition, including visual harmony, balance and gestalt principles. Students will learn how to create images using a variety of different approaches including expressive mark-making, drawing, collage and photography. Workshops will also cover the production of vector-based drawing in Adobe Illustrator.Throughout the module, students will learn about how to devise effective designs for a range of communication problems.
The module will encourage an experimental / lateral approach to initial research, problem-solving, concept building, creative visualisation and typography, resolved through an active critical engagement with the concerns of the module.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. develop concepts pertinent to the set briefs;
2. coherently articulate and rationalise their visual / conceptual proposals in critiques and in written work.
3. demonstrate familiarity with the basic concepts of image making for graphic design.
4. demonstrate understanding of typographic principles.
5. demonstrate an understanding of grids, composition and the relationship between type and image
6. demonstrate skills in visual research analysis for creative communication.
