This module is not approved as a discovery module

Module summary

In this module the students will learn about the three basic cornerstones of sustainability: environment, economy and society. The module will introduce you to emerging business and innovation strategies, eco-design services, principles and approaches, socially responsible design, design activism, responsive art and design, sustainable consumption and marketing. The module will involve working on projects where students will develop a range of skills and explore methods and approaches used in the design industry and academia to achieve sustainable design.

Objectives

This module is intended to provide students with an understanding of the role that designers play in determining the sustainable impacts of their practice. It aims to broaden student’s understanding of sustainable design strategies and current practice within industry and encourage students to employ a range of tools and techniques to their future work.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate awareness of the ecological, social, economic and cultural context within which design operates;
2. Understand how the concepts, thinking and techniques specific to sustainable design are employed by businesses to improve their performance;
3. Use tools to identify areas for improvement and assess new design work;
4. Explore and critically appraise the tensions between industrial practice and advocated strategies and the role of design in supporting sustainable Twenty-first Century societies;
5. Apply learning to support a practical design project in order to address a range of issues associated with sustainability.

Syllabus

The first unit of the module develops students an understanding of the current sustainable design practice and implementation within industry. The second unit of the module focuses around the principles and practice for designers pursuing socially sustainability outcomes. In the last unit, the students will be introduced to sustainable products and service, current tools and techniques used for successful sustainable design, approaches to design for durability and sustainable behaviour.
