Module summary

The aim of the module is to provide students with a deeper understanding of design communication for both print and screen based applications. Students will learn how to effectively plan and execute screen based interactions through the use of wireframes, prototypes and storyboards as well as an appreciation of the nuances of interface design and information architecture. Students will learn advanced typographic principals in relation to both screen and print based media. The module will involve working on projects where students will develop a range of skills and explore conventional and unconventional approaches to graphic design communications.

Objectives

Learning outcomes
1. Understand and demonstrate the ability to plan and execute digital design interactions to achieve a predetermined goal.
2. Demonstrate an ability to produce effective wireframes, prototypes and storyboards.
3. Explore conventional and unconventional interaction design.
4. Use advanced research and analysis skills to generate a range of unique insights.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of advanced typographic principals.
6. Produce graphic design solutions that demonstrate an advanced understanding of composition, hierarchy and effective visual communication.

Skills outcomes
Students will gain skills in industry standard design tools that will be introduced mainly in relation to print and screen based graphic design

Private study

Students are expected to carry out research on-line, analyse and present findings as well as complete assignments during private study. Students are given lists of extra supporting information. This information is chosen to underpin their understanding of the assessed projects and to facilitate further investigation. It is expected that you will complete a minimum of 100.00 hours of private study for this module. The lectures provide the foundation of information needed by you to successfully complete the module, however, you will be expected to use private study to develop your understanding of the subject. Through your private study you will explore in greater depth the concepts discussed in the lectures as well as having the opportunity to consider the wider contextual aspects of the subject. Private study can consist of using material from the library, national and international news and the internet.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be provided with discussion-led formative feedback at key points during the module. Group critiques will allow students to share their work with their peers and the staff whilst still under development. It also allows other students to gain insights from other’s feedback. Students will also receive formal individual feedback during the semester. This will allow for focused identification of strengths and weaknesses and for tailored advice to be provided regarding further development/processes required.
