Objectives

The module provides students with the opportunity for the further exploration of concerns that have developed during the course. It builds upon skills and opportunities developed in the studio at Levels 1 and 2.

Using various media, materials and technologies, the student's creative and imaginative interests develop through the design and resolution of artworks/artefacts and the identification and use of selected references and related research material.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- demonstrate a coherent and detailed knowledge of the relationship between subject, content and process in developing a body of art practice;
- apply their knowledge and understanding in the development of a body of visual work and associated research that consolidates an individual/independent position;
- demonstrate a conceptual understanding of the use of visual language and associated processes;
- undertake critical, reflective self-appraisal and evaluation as the basis for the development and understanding of art practice.

Syllabus

Practical study includes the development of a critical and imaginative interpretation of purpose and content, the resolution of technical and formal characteristics, further experimentation and facility with visual language and the continued acquisition of selected practical skills and technologies in designing and fabricating artworks/artefacts. A programme of seminars and tutorials support students in the development of a body of visual research and further skills in the critical analysis and understanding of their research.

The module is assessed through a portfolio of visual works which provide the basis for art works to be developed in Semester 2, together with a supportive research and analysis file including written reports which outline intended directions for the student's final presentation and evaluate the specific outcomes of this module. The scope and format of their assessed work will be discussed in tutorials and tutorial review.
