Module summary

This module will introduce students to the principles of UX and UI, visual perception, auditory & kinaesthetic interactions in 3D environments. Narrative for asynchronous story types and how to use storytelling for immersion & engagement will also be studied. In the practical sessions in XLAB, through a process of experimentation and play, students will be familiarised with the software and tools they will use to create immersive & engaging experiences.

Objectives

The emphasis of this module is the importance of experimentation and play as students develop their creative practice using these emerging technologies. Students also gain theoretical understanding in UX and UI for 3D environments, visual perception & brain responses to auditory and kinaesthetic interactions. Finally, in order that the experiences they create connect emotionally with users, students will learn how to use storytelling to engage users and how to develop narrative for asynchronous story types.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have provided evidence of being able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of UX & UI principles within a design project.
2. Analyse and interpret current theories and principles of visual perception & auditory and kinaesthetic interaction with regards to the design of 3D experiences.
3. Develop an understanding of how to use storytelling to engage users.
4. Demonstrate the ability to complete a creative design project incorporating appropriate technologies.

Syllabus

This module will deliver a combination of lectures & practical sessions in XLAB. Lectures will cover the principles of UX and UI for 3D environments, visual perception & brain response, as well as narrative construction for asynchronous story types. In the practical sessions situated in XLAB, students will develop their creative practice through a process of experimentation and play by having hands-on experience with the relevant technologies.

· Reviewing supplied material online (papers, books, videos & websites): 30 hours To gain confidence to develop and articulate their own ideas, students will engage in private study.
· Literature search and reading: 30 hours
· Independent research and preparation: 50 hours
· Preparation and evaluation of assessed outcomes: 54 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored through:
· Regular attendance at lectures, practicals and tutorials (absences dealt with through the normal School channels).
· Participation in lectures, practicals and tutorials.
· Feedback given in every tutorial.
