Module summary

In this module students will investigate the potential of digital, interactive, and immersive techniques for both brands and third sector organisations and how to apply the knowledge to a commercial or social context. This module provides the opportunity for students to demonstrate critical and creative mastery within a specific issue or topic in this area of design by engaging in an advanced study and the development of creative project chosen by themselves.

Objectives

This module gives students the opportunity to learn theoretical and practical perspectives regarding digital, interactive and immersive design in both commercial & social contexts. Students will address needs of users, brands & third sector organizations by developing creative, innovative, and effective design solutions that address a variety of commercial & social strategic objectives, as well as users’ goals. They will then develop and complete a design project at a professional level. During the module, emphasis will be given to the importance of evaluating design outputs and assessing them in real situations with real and suitable users, in order to achieve the effective user-centred design solutions.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have provided evidence of being able to:

1. Analyse and interpret current challenges, theories and principles of digital, interactive, and immersive design from both brand/third sector and user perspectives.
2. Access and critically analyse literature, and plan appropriate research methods for the successful development of a design project.
3. Design and prototype effective and stimulating design solutions in response to a specific brief, problem and need.
4. Demonstrate the ability to complete a higher-level design project incorporating appropriate technologies.
5. Select and apply appropriate conceptual, practical and research tools and methods to support the project evaluation in real-life contexts with suitable users.
6. Show creative skills in the realisation of a design project, and accurately report the planning, execution and evaluation of the project.

Syllabus

This module will deliver a combination of lectures, workshops, supervision, and practical sessions. Lectures will engage students with the theory, research and professional approaches to digital, interactive, and immersive design, in both business and social contexts. The lecture content will be built around (and inform) each stage of the research and design process. Workshops and practicals will give students the opportunity to put their knowledge and theory into practice by planning, designing, prototyping and evaluating their creative project, as well as their research.
