Module summary

Interdisciplinary Art and Design offers flexible and innovative approaches to visual and social issues and develops creative practice to a professional standard. The module introduces a theoretical framework for this and then engages with the possibilities and advantages inherent in a hybrid practice of Art and Design. Practice that operates at this interface in contemporary culture often provokes diverse audiences to speak out and think critically and creatively.Examples of these integrated/hybrid Art and Design practices might include participatory and community arts/design projects, digital and physical mapping projects, artist books, publication as practice, interpretation of archival and historical materials, speculative design projects, environmental, landscape and place-based work.

Objectives

This module gives students the opportunity to:
• Employ theoretical and practical perspectives in relation to an integrated Art and Design brief.
• Explore the creative potential of interdisciplinary Art and Design approaches and critical design methodologies and interrogate the boundaries of the two disciplines.
• Investigate the potential of hybrid Art and Design artefacts in a range of contexts: creative industries, exhibition, museum, community, educational, public arena.
• Engage with the needs of audiences/users of integrated Art and Design practices in the specific context of experimental, critical, and creative approaches.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have provided evidence of being able to:
1. Analyse and interpret current trends and theories and principles of interdisciplinary Art and Design in order to develop a creative project.
2. Access and critically analyse literature and plan appropriate research methods for the successful development of this creative art and design project
3. Undertake an up-to-date survey and analysis of contemporary Art and Design practices
4. Design, develop and fabricate effective and visually stimulating creative art and design outputs.
5. Contribute to the implementation, coordination and successful execution of an Art and Design project to a professional standard.

Syllabus

This module will deliver a combination of lectures and practical sessions. Lectures will engage students with the theory, research and professional approaches to contemporary issues in interdisciplinary Art and Design. The lecture content will be built around (and inform) each stage of the research, design and fabrication process. In addition to research the opportunities afforded by developing a flexible creative project will give students the chance to put their knowledge and theory into practice by planning, designing, developing and evaluating their creative project, both aesthetically and in terms of impact, this will enhance their professional portfolio.
