Module summary

This module will introduce students to the oral environment predominantly in health, as normal tissues and oral structures. It aims to provide them with a knowledge of the anatomy and biology of the oral environment in order to give a grounding for their clinical practice.Unless your programme is designed to be delivered fully online, your programme and modules will be delivered predominantly on campus. These teaching activities will be supported by the use of digital tools to enhance your learning and experience. The catalogue provides details of your module and the teaching methods used to deliver your module (for example, lecture, seminar, tutorial, practical). It does not necessarily provide you with information about the mode of delivery for specific learning activities on your module (whether these will be on campus or delivered digitally). Information about the delivery mode for learning and teaching activities for your modules will be published in the timetable and in the Minerva area for your modules. You can access your personalised timetable through Minerva or our UniLeeds app on your mobile device. We sometimes need to adapt our teaching to take account of developments in the subject, in response to new research and current affairs for example, and on occasion we may need to adapt our delivery modes too. You will be kept informed of any proposed changes to the content and delivery of your modules as described in the module catalogue and we’ll make sure you understand and agree the reasons for any changes before they are introduced.

Objectives

The student should gain knowledge of the anatomy of the facial structures & oral environment including; the facial skeleton, soft tissues, salivary glands and dental hard tissues encountered. The student should be able to identify individual teeth and be able to describe their morphological features and development. They will have a knowledge of the biochemical events that occur in living tissues, at both the molecular and cellular level. They will also be aware of the role of micro-organisms, especially those particularly related to the development of biofilms (plaque) within the oral environment, both in health and disease.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of basic head and neck anatomy including the teeth and supporting structures
2. Have a knowledge of tooth morphology and the stages of tooth development.
3. Demonstrate basic knowledge of oral microbiology including dental biofilms and their clinical assessment.
4. Demonstrate an awareness of the basic cell biology of oral structures including the role of principle molecules and the normal processes that occur in living cells.
5. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the physiology and biochemistry of saliva.

Skills outcomes
Ability to identify human tooth types.
