Module summary

Anxiety and Pain management is the key skill that is the basis for all clinical dental treatment. The course lays the foundations of providing effective anxiety and pain control for your patients for the rest of your careers. The module integrates essential elements of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and behavioural science to their clinical application. Where possible, relevant topics are covered by lecture or e-lecture before the associated practical or clinical exercise, but to some degree learning is occurring on all fronts simultaneously.Unless your programme is designed to be delivered fully online, your programme and modules will be delivered predominantly on campus. These teaching activities will be supported by the use of digital tools to enhance your learning and experience. The catalogue provides details of your module and the teaching methods used to deliver your module (for example, lecture, seminar, tutorial, practical). It does not necessarily provide you with information about the mode of delivery for specific learning activities on your module (whether these will be on campus or delivered digitally). Information about the delivery mode for learning and teaching activities for your modules will be published in the timetable and in the Minerva area for your modules. You can access your personalised timetable through Minerva or our UniLeeds app on your mobile device. We sometimes need to adapt our teaching to take account of developments in the subject, in response to new research and current affairs for example, and on occasion we may need to adapt our delivery modes too. You will be kept informed of any proposed changes to the content and delivery of your modules as described in the module catalogue and we’ll make sure you understand and agree the reasons for any changes before they are introduced.

Objectives

This module will introduce the student to the anatomy, neuroanatomy, physiology, pharmacology and behavioural science relating to local anaesthesia. The module will provide the students with an insight into the physiology and psychology of pain and anxiety and it’s relevance to dentistry. An introduction to the equipment, drugs and techniques available for dental anaesthesia will provide the grounding for later clinical experience in this area of dentistry.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a knowledge of anxiety, its psychology and its relationship, causes and effects on the dentally anxious patient.
2. Demonstrate an awareness of pain and understand the importance of its psychological and social context and management.
3. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pharmacology relevant to clinical dentistry with a focus on the delivery of local anaesthetic.
4. Demonstrate the knowledge of the equipment and techniques available to allow safe and effective administration of dental local anaesthetic following recommended guidelines.

Skills outcomes
Familiarity with selected equipment and techniques available to allow safe and effective administration of dental local anaesthetic following recommended guidelines
