Module summary

This module introduces students to oral disease with a focus on periodontal diseases, relating aetiology and clinical development to concomitant histological, microbiological and biochemical changes. This integrated approach will permit the student to have knowledge of the disease processes, host defences and repair mechanisms and how they relate to clinical practice. Principles of diagnosis, periodontal treatment planning and provision of non-surgical periodontal therapy will be covered, incorporating clinical and radiographic interpretation. The module will provide the basic scientific principles of medical ionizing radiation and the statutory regulations governing its use in relation to dentistry. Learning opportunities include live and e-lectures, tutorials and traditional small group teaching in conjunction with self-reflection and peer review.Unless your programme is designed to be delivered fully online, your programme and modules will be delivered predominantly on campus. Objectives

The module will introduce the student to oral disease with a focus on the aetiology, development, diagnosis and management of the periodontal diseases. The module will provide the students with an insight into the clinical, histological and biochemical changes within the periodontal tissues during disease and repair. The role of microbial plaque and the host defence mechanisms will be outlined. The module also focuses on the basics of the regulation and use of ionising radiation within dentistry.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the students will be able to:
1. Outline the basics of oral disease
2. Describe the aetiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and non-surgical management of diseases affecting the periodontal tissues
3. Describe the functioning human immune system and its role in both health and disease
4. Describe the basic scientific principles of medical ionizing radiation and the statutory regulations governing its use in relation to dentistry.

-Principles of periodontal history, examination and periodontal indices
-Introduction to periodontal diagnosis and treatment planning
-Introduction to radiography and radiology
-Principles of basic non-surgical periodontal therapy and periodontal operative techniques
