Module summary

This module develops the student’s academic and research skills. The student will recognise how to apply an evidence-based approach to learning and decision making. Structured learning activities will enable the student to learn how to use critical thinking and problem solving skills in preparation for their subsequent final year research project (to be taken in the last year of the programme).The module also includes activities in relation to dental team working, professionalism and the protection of patients.The content of the module relates to the academic knowledge and skills expected of a dental hygienist. This module builds on teaching delivered in year one and links to professional practice.

Objectives

To provide the student with the academic knowledge and skills required of a Dental Hygienist.
Through the use of structured and self-directed activities the module will equip the student with the skills to implement evidence based dentistry.
It aims to encourage the student to apply and build on knowledge gained from prior teaching.
There will be a focus on developing and strengthening the key academic skills required for the completion of a Final Year Research Project in Year 3.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student will be able to:
1. Describe the principles of evidence based dentistry and apply these in relation to the practice of dental hygiene.
2. Recognise the role and professional responsibilities of being a member of the dental team and a dental registrant.
3. Explain and discuss the academic knowledge underpinning the practice of dentistry as a dental hygienist.

Topics introduced earlier in the course will be explored in greater detail including:
• Relationships between periodontal disease, its management and general health.
• Management of advanced forms of periodontal disease. including options for surgery and adjunctive therapies.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students are provided with formative feedback through the opportunities listed below. Students having difficulties with their progress during the module are encouraged to seek advice from the modular team.
Group verbal feedback is provided by the facilitator during Problem Based Learning sessions and written feedback at conclusion of each scenario.
Seminar participation helps to gauge general progress and allow identification of any learning issues that need immediate attention.
Individual written feedback is provided to the student on their literature search strategy and summary.
Group feedback is provided on the summative examination, and individual feedback can be provided on request.

The literature search strategy and summary must be passed independently of the module examination. The student taking this module must submit a satisfactory literature search strategy and summary for progression to the next year of study. Formative feedback on progress during Problem Based Learning group work is provided by the facilitator.
