Pre-requisite qualifications

Two years’ full time (or equivalent) post-graduation clinical experience in hospital dentistry or General Dental Practice or has successfully completed the PGCert in Oral Surgery from University of Leeds

IELTS: 7.0 overall with no less than 6.5 in any component
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) of 87 (with no less than 20 in listening, 20 in reading, 22 in speaking and 21 in writing)
TOEFL Internet-based Test: 100 overall with no less than 24 in Listening, 21 in Reading, 22 in Writing and 26 in Speaking.

Module summary

The advanced oral surgery module builds on technical and theoretical knowledge from the Foundations of Oral Surgery module and applies them in the real world clinical setting. Students will learn mastery of the techniques as well as other more complex techniques for management of (for example) surgical endodontics, odontogenic cysts and benign dentoalveolar pathology.Students will perfect their diagnostic and communication skills in assessment and management of complex oro-facial symtoms and pathology.Students will use patient and peer feedback to guide their own clinical development and build confidence in their clinical skills. Familiarity with clinical support arrangements such as Managed Clinical Networks will further engender confidence in the service students can provide.Unless your programme is designed to be delivered fully online, your programme and modules will be delivered predominantly on campus. These teaching activities will be supported by the use of digital tools to enhance your learning and experience. Objectives

The aims of this module are:
• To develop students technical and patient management skills in a clinical setting in the context of more complex oral surgery procedures such as wisdom tooth removal, surgical endodontics, management of odontogenic cysts.
• To perfect clinical communication and diagnostic skills with respect to such matters as complex diagnoses, management of facial pain and means of anxiety management.
• To build confidence to undertake independent practice by the use of patient and peer feedback, personal reflection and familiarity with clinical systems such as Managed Clinical Networks.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student will be able to:
• Apply in-depth knowledge of surgical techniques in provision of complex oral surgery care.
• Synthesize complex differential diagnoses and apply clinical judgement in management of complex clinical presentations
• Confidently manage acute presentations and peri-operative complications in oral surgery
• Apply advanced clinical communication skills in discussing complex diagnoses with patients.
• Apply results of personal reflection, peer and patient feedback in professional development.

• Surgical techniques for uncomplicated wisdom tooth removal, surgical endodontics, management of benign odontogenic pathology.

Private study

Students will review the evidence base for management of complications of dentoalveolar surgery and research patient pathways and service design models for surgical services. They will also spend time researching the diagnosis and management of facial pain and the evidence for this. Students will also keep a reflective log of their surgical experience and spend time collecting, analysing and reflecting on patient feedback.
