Module summary

This module will discuss how you can use clinical audit to improve your general practice and make a positive difference to your patients. It will include information on how to identify suitable topics for audit, how to plan, collect different types of data and how to compile, analyse and interpret information, how to implement change and when to re-audit. An audit project will be undertaken and reported.Unless your programme is designed to be delivered fully online, your programme and modules will be delivered predominantly on campus. These teaching activities will be supported by the use of digital tools to enhance your learning and experience. Objectives

The aims of this module are to:
- provide participants with skills to design, implement and analyse effective multi-professional clinical audit and to implement any identified improvements needed in practice.
- Give participants an understanding that the audit cycle is an integral and essential part of continuous quality improvement in the constantly evolving landscape of health care.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module you will be able to:
1. Argue, successfully, the rationale for clinical audit and explain its role in quality health care.
2. Describe and implement the clinical audit cycle.
3. Prioritise and select topics for audit and source evidence-based standards.
4. Articulate and apply the audit cycle in practice to improve patient care and monitor progress.
5. Analyse and synthesise data, identifying the need for change, its implementation and management.

Skills relevant to the use, analysis and benefit of clinical audit in general dental practice.

- The difference between audit and research.
- Examples of effective audits, techniques for identifying priorities for audit and the conversion of clinical guidelines to standards.
- Team roles and the sharing of responsibilities.
- Benchmarks and other approaches to standard setting.
- Use of questionnaires and other methods of investigation.
- Measurement, data collection, analysis and interpretation.
- Management of change and embedding the audit cycle.
- Development and implementation of an audit that demonstrates how the principles lead to changes in clinical practice.

Private study

Online learning will allow time for access and review of clinical guidelines.
Private study will aid review of content, allow reading of the relevant literature / guidelines, allow for the development of audit proposals and the writing of the definitive audit.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Feedback will be given in seminars and when audit proposals are presented to the group.
