Module summary
This module is for teachers working in, or wishing to work in, academic English contexts such as university language centres. The module will help you understand what distinguishes academic discourse from other kinds and so understand the kinds of 'literacies' - skills, knowledge and technical abilities - that tertiary level students need to have, and understand how English for Academic Purposes teaching can help learners acquire those skills.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to critically discuss and, where appropriate, apply to practice, the following topics:- Definitions of EAP
- Academic discourse
- Approaches to the description of academic discourse
- Approaches to EAP course design
- Approaches to the teaching of written practices in academia
- Approaches to the teaching of oral practices in academic
- Approaches to assessment in EAP
Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes will include:
- Understandings of the nature of pedagogic academic discourse ie the academic discourse undergraduates and postgraduates engage in, and thus the kinds of practices that define academic literacies
- Understandings of what EAP (EGAP and ESAP) is and can be
- Understandings of issues to do with teaching and assessing EAP
Skills outcomes
Students completing this module will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities:
- to engage critically in the development of professional/diciplinary boundaries and norms
- to make effective decisions in complex and unpredictable situations
- to learn independently

Independent online learning:- Pre-sessional viewing of pre-recorded lectures, pre-reading, and study group discussion tasks: 6 hours per week = 30 hours

Assessment as for all School of Education Level 5 modules, will be by assignment. Assignments will ask participants to consider the relevance and implications of one or more aspects of the issues that have been discussed in the module for their own TESOL context.
