Objectives
On completion of this module students should be: able to give an overview of the underlying principles, goals and objectives in materials design and how these are realised in their own working context; familiar with a variety of materials evaluation procedures and understand the professional skills needed in order to use them; able to describe and analyse the materials design process and how it is applied in their own context; able to make principles decisions regarding the design and adaptation of materials for their own learners.Syllabus
The role of instructional material. Analysing and evaluating materials - views of language, learning and socio-political values implicit in materials. The materials design process at the macro level. The materials design process at the micro level. Materials for mixed ability classes. Adapting coursebooks to meet local needs.
Teaching methods
Seminars, classroom discussions and workshops activities.
Methods of assessment
One essay amounting in total to 2500-3000 words or equivalent piece of work. The final dates for submission of coursework assignments will be determined at the commencement of each academic session.
