Objectives

This module provides an introduction to the principles of high frequency electronics.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Identify and describe a range of standard components used in high-frequency systems.
2. Explain the principles of distributed circuits and transmission lines, and solve a range of transmission line problems using standard methods.
3. Analyse and design a range of high-frequency circuits using lumped components and distributed circuits, including filters and amplifiers.
4. Explain the limitations of lumped components in high-frequency circuits.

Introduction to high frequency systems
Transmitters and receivers
Electromagnetic fields
LC filters
Practical inductors and capacitors
Transmission lines
Co-axial and microstrip lines
Transmission line filters
High frequency amplifiers

Private study

Students are expected to use private study time to consolidate their understanding of course materials, to undertake preparatory work for seminars, workshops, tutorials, examples classes and practical classes, complete the project and simulation work, and also to prepare for in-course and summative assessments.



Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students studying ELEC modules will receive formative feedback in a variety of ways, including the use of self-test quizzes on Minerva, practice questions/worked examples and (where appropriate) through verbal interaction with teaching staff and/or post-graduate demonstrators.
