Module summary

This is an introductory module for students on the Healthcare Route of the International Foundation Year intending to proceed onto a nursing degree at the University of Leeds. The module will help students develop an awareness of nursing in a UK context, the professional values embedded in nursing practice and how nursing works within the NHS system with a view to students being successful in their nursing interviews. In addition, students will develop core language specific to nursing and an awareness of how to communicate with the diverse group of patients they will meet in a UK setting.

Objectives

The main objective of the module is for students to develop the academic language and skills required for undergraduate study in nursing.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the module students should be able to:
1. discuss what is expected of them as a nurse in a UK context
2. use language appropriate to different nursing contexts and be familiar with nursing terminology.
3. understand and speak confidently about the professional principles and ethical guidelines required of nurses in the UK and the culture of compassionate care.
4. understand, take notes on and summarise the key messages in a subject-specific lecture.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students' progress is monitored on a continuous basis through their participation in class activities. There will be opportunities for viva practice in small groups and then 2 individual sessions per student where formative written feedback will be provided on performance.
