Module summary

This module is for students who already have a basic knowledge of the language and wish to take their Korean to the next level. The emphasis is on achieving a practical level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) while developing greater confidence and accuracy when using the language in a limited range of situations. The module also aims to stimulate students' interest in Korea and deepen their knowledge and understanding of Korean society and some of the major cultural and linguistic differences.

Objectives

Students taking this module will be able to build on their existing knowledge of the language and develop and extend their ability to communicate and function in Korean. They should also further develop their understanding of Korean culture and know how to avoid major social, cultural and linguistic faux pas when speaking Korean and/or when in Korea.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of commonly used instructions, commands and expressions in the topics covered;
- read short texts in Korean;
- extract accurately the key information from audio and/or video material;
- handle short conversations in a familiar context;
- understand, and make themselves understood by, a sympathetic native speaker in specific contexts;
- demonstrate awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Korean and English;
- produce short pieces of independent writing in Korean script

1. Describing the characteristics of a person, place or thing
2. Giving opinions, making comparisons and asking preferences
3. Talking about routines, habits and interests
4. Understanding and giving common instructions and commands
5. Understanding and putting into practice the rules of writing
6. Health and illnesses
7. Changes and developments regarding places and people
8. Making a detailed self-introduction
9. Feelings and emotions
10. Arranging to meet, accepting and declining invitations
11. Making phone calls
12. Talking about problems and explaining solutions

Private study

Guided private study each week including review of the lesson, consolidation and homework tasks; additional private study tasks which will be submitted for the portfolio; preparation and practice for the core tasks in Semester 1 and the final speaking exam in Semester 2.

Guided independent study, participation in class, feedback on the core tasks, feedback on homework and preparation for the speaking exam.
