Module summary

This module is for students who already have a good grade at GCSE, CEFR A2 or equivalent and wish to take their French to the next level. The emphasis is on achieving a good level of communication and accuracy in speaking, listening, reading and writing in both formal and informal registers. The module includes a mini-research project which provides the opportunity to research an area related to a French-speaking country and/or the student's area of study through the medium of French. Communication skills which will be developed include discussion, presentation skills and writing skills.

Objectives

To consolidate knowledge of the French language at lower intermediate/GCSE/CEFR A2 level and develop skills and competence up to AS-level/CEFR B1. On completion of the module, students should be able to deal with information of a general nature in a familiar context and identify and note main points and opinions; sustain longer conversations in French and handle familiar and unfamiliar situations with some ease; exchange opinions and ideas on a range of topics. Students should be able to report facts and opinions with accuracy and compose some creative writing of a certain length.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to:
- Make themselves understood by a sympathetic native speaker over a range of everyday topics
- Understand the main points of clear, standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, and leisure activities, and be able to understand the main points of some TV programmes when the delivery is slow and clear
- Demonstrate proficiency in listening through accurately extracting key information from audio sources
- Demonstrate proficiency in reading through accurately extracting key information from written sources
- Describe experiences and impressions with a degree of accuracy and fluency appropriate to this level
- Write short independent texts in French
- Demonstrate greater understanding and knowledge of key grammar points with appropriate usage
- Demonstrate awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of French and English
