Entry qualifications to appropriate French programme, or equivalent linguistic competence (this would normally be grade B in French at A level CEFR B1+/B2-)

Module summary

This first year French language module focuses on the essential elements of French grammar, written and spoken competence at post A level (CEFR B1+) backing up lectures and weekly language classes. In addition to the weekly written language seminars, all students spend one hour a week in a small group class with a native speaker lecteur/lectrice. These classes aim to improve aural and oral skills through exercises such as listening practice, debates, presentations and discussions.All university courses in French emphasise the need to aim at grammatical accuracy.Students wishing to continue studying French, as a Discovery module, at this level, have a choice between FREN1010 and FLTU1345 (see FLTU/Languages for All modules). FREN1010 is the core language module of the first year of the French degree programme. It is taught via fortnightly lectures linked to weekly seminars with a strong grammatical focus and weekly speaking practice workshops. FLTU 1345 is taught weekly with a 2 hour seminar (with a break) in a more communicative integrated skills approach. For more information consult the module catalogue. Objectives

1. to reinforce and extend students’ knowledge of French grammar and to introduce them to the analysis of sentence structure.
2. to develop students’ awareness of the requirements for writing correct French and of register/français soutenu.
3. to develop students’ competence in spoken French with particular reference to the presentation of structured argument, summary, and exposé.
4. to develop students’ awareness of register in language with particular to distinctions between spoken and written French.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the module students should have
1. consolidated their existing competences and attained an equivalent level to the CEFR B2 with a particular focus on developing grammatical accuracy.
2. perfected skills in French speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation;
3. developed skills to access and make appropriate use of sources of information and reference tools
4. applied their knowledge and understanding of the language in new and varied contexts
5. demonstrated the ability to write in a clear and grammatically correct French, using a variety of registers and a complex vocabulary, paraphrasing and translating from English to French.
6. Increased fluency and confidence in order to converse in French on current issues and course topics

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- understand and participate in general conversation on a variety of topics ;
- read authentic texts on a variety of topics ;
-recognise, describe and use the essentials of French grammar and syntax;
-express themselves fluently and accurately in French and in English;
- organise their own independent study of the French language and culture.


Syllabus

10 grammar lectures, weekly language seminars and speaking skills workshops/Travaux Pratiques.

Both grammar seminars and Speaking skills workshop classes offer the opportunity to complete formative tasks leading to the formal assessments in both written and spoken language

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Regular homework (approximately 3 pieces per semester) marked by a tutor and with individual written feedback. Practice written examination mid semester 1. The assessed 'Contôle Continu'/ written course work is completed at the end of semester 2 and a mock written task in semester 2 is an opportunity for individualised feedback before the final contrôle continu. Practice/mock speaking exam in class in semester 2.

A pass is required in the written course work in order to pass this module. The format of this exam may be subject to change should the situation surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic allow. Students will be informed well in advance if this becomes the case.
