Module summary

This module will enable an absolute beginner student to develop their language skills up to A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).Language Learning in this module is student-centred and task-based. The classroom is conceived as a social space for communication. Listening, reading, writing, speaking, interaction and mediation tasks will be set.This single-semester module is the first of two language modules taken by beginners in year 1. Both are studied alongside a year-long module offering an introduction to the histories and cultures of the French-speaking world.

Objectives

To develop ab initio French language skills and competence up to CEFRL A1 level/equivalent.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able:
In speaking to
1. understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
2. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of grammar appropriate at A1 level to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
In writing to
3. write short texts in response to a task or stimulus text on familiar topics, complete forms and other forms of simple everyday correspondence.


Syllabus

The syllabus for this module typically includes the following elements:
• giving and asking for personal information, greetings and farewells, seeking for clarification of linguistic items
• expressing intentions, speaking about interests and expressing the reasons why you do things
• describing places and countries, expressing existence, location and speaking about the weather
• identifying objects, expressing necessity, shopping, speaking about preferences
• speaking about appearance and character, expressing likes and dislikes, speaking about personal relationships
• speaking about daily life and expressing frequency
• asking for and giving information about food, restaurants and eating habits
• describing places where you live, what you like about a place, asking for and giving information about a place
• talking about past experiences, skills and abilities

Review of the lesson/lecture and preparation for the weekly lectures/classes – 60 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will complete several weekly homework tasks to consolidate learning and prepare for the next class.
Feedback in class and on submitted homework will be provided. Draft facility for Portfolio tasks and mock exams.
Draft portfolio monitored week 6 with feed forward to final submission in Jan exam period.
