Module summary

This module provides students with an overview of the internal development of the French language from its origins to the present day and aims to enable students to identify and analyse the key linguistic features which characterise the French language at different periods of its history. The course is taught entirely by lectures in French.

Objectives

The module has two key objectives:
- to provide students with an overview of the internal development of the French language from its origins to the present day;
- to enable students to identify and analyse the key linguistic features which characterise the French language at different periods of its history.

Syllabus

In the first five weeks of the course, the emphasis is on examining internal changes: key changes in pronunciation, vocabulary, word order and case up to the late Middle Ages.

In the second half of the course, the emphasis is on exploring some of the external factors which led to the standardization and diffusion of French both within France and beyond its borders.

Recorded lectures which students are expected to watch in advance of the class introduce key general topics and concepts, provide illustrations of linguistic commentary and analysis, and detailed bibliographies. These lectures also set quizzes on the key points made in each lecture as well as exercises involving analysis of short extracts of written texts from the relevant periods; students are expected to prepare these exercises in advance for going over in the classes.
