Module summaryThis module will give you the opportunity to help pupils learning your discipline in primary and secondary schools and other educational settings in Leeds and the surrounding area whilst developing your skills as a researcher and communicator. You will generally gain greater self-awareness and confidence in your ability to work with others, to take individual responsibility for planning and management of your work and to appreciate how your knowledge and skills can be transferred and applied in an educational setting.The module will provide valuable work experience for students and may be of particular interest to students who may be considering a career in teaching.
ObjectivesOn completion of the module, which includes a 30-hour placement in an educational setting in the region (both observing and assisting with teaching), you should be able to demonstrate:
A. Skills in the preparation of classroom material, and its effective presentation.
B. An awareness of the role of teachers both in the classroom and more widely in educational settings.
C. Some insights into changing ideas in education and how they play out in educational settings.
D. Skills in the preparation of the two-part written assessment.
On completion of this module, students will:
- have applied their knowledge and skills in an educational setting
- have prepared a set of learning materials of benefit to the setting
- shown that they can achieve what they set out to do; this will involve negotiating planning, managing their work, reflecting on its merits and shortcomings, assessing results and drawing conclusions
- write an academic essay and a document containing learning resources
- Ability to use own initiative
- Communication skills: teaching, working in a school setting
- Creativity: developing and evaluating innovative teaching materials
- Networking: working in the placement environment
- Negotiating: developing the placement working practices
- Problem-solving skills
- Reflective learning skills
- Resource management: planning, developing and delivering learning materials
- Team-working skills
- Time management and ability to prioritise own workload.
- Introduction to the module - a one hour lecture at start of Semester 1 run by Students into Schools
- A series of five lectures comprising training sessions and workshops
- Progress meetings with the teaching team will be held throughout the semesters
- Assessment of each student will take place at the end of teaching in Semester 2

Private studyStudents will work independently on a project - levels of work-based supervision will vary depending on the nature of the project and the placement.
- Classroom hours: 30 hours
- Preparation of classroom/ educational setting materials and activities : 90 hours
- Research, preparation and writing up of assessment: 73 hours
Opportunities for Formative FeedbackStudent progress is monitored by:
1. meetings with an academic supervisor who will discuss and monitor progress with a student.
2. support from the school organisation hosting the placement.
