Pre-requisite qualifications

Upper second or first class bachelors' degree or international equivalent in a relevant subject (e.g. economics, accountancy, finance, operations research, statistics or mathematics).

Applicants whose first language is not English or who have not been educated previously in English will need to attain ONE of the following:
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System) an overall band of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each component skill
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) of 92 with no less than 21 in listening, 21 in reading, 23 in speaking and 22 in writing

Module summary

The module provides students with a thorough understanding of the role and application of economics in health and health care. The application of the economic concepts and theory within the module will provide students with a greater understanding of the challenges facing the health sector today and how they may be both explained and addressed. Topics include health care markets, the role of government, health financing; equity in health (care); and financing and distribution of health care.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Gain in-depth knowledge and advanced understanding of economic theory used in health economics
- Apply the concepts of economic theory to health care; with specific appraisal of the application to the UK health care sector
- Develop and articulate clearly a critical appreciation of the significant features of health care markets, their strengths and limitations

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module the student will have:
- A clear understanding of the health sector landscape including the challenges facing the sector today
- An appreciation and critical understanding of the nature and role of economics in the context of challenges in health and health care
- A sophisticated understanding and critical application of relevant concepts and principles to the analysis of given problems within a health care context

Skills outcomes
On successful completion of this module the student will have acquired:
- An awareness of contemporary social and contextual issues of health care decisions and policies
- Skills to link health care decisions evaluation, social consequences and policy implications.

Private study

Students will have to have to prepare for the seminars by completing the relevant reading and practical exercises in advance. They will study and reflect on the teaching materials and the seminar content to prepare for the assessment.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Lectures and seminars will provide opportunities for students to ask questions and express their views via small group discussions. In class/on-line quizzes will be used to periodically test students' understanding and the marks will be feedback to students.

The exam will consist of six short essay questions; students will be asked to answer three from six questions.
