Pre-requisite qualificationsA bachelor degree (normally 2:1), applicants without a degree are encouraged to apply through our non-standard entry route.
Where appropriate current registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) or Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
Access to appropriate pharmacy practice, i.e. involved in supervising others, to allow the achievement of the module outcomes and work-based assignments.

Module summaryThis module adopts a practice based approach to educational supervision in the workplace. Participants are encouraged to draw on and present their own experience as learning opportunities throughout the module. The content of the module is mapped to the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) guidance for tutoring and supervising preregistration pharmacy professionals in training and the HEE Professional Development Framework for Educators. We encourage participants to integrate the skills and knowledge introduced during the module to their practice. This module is suitable for all pharmacists or pharmacy technicians (tutors and trainers) involved in supervising and supporting trainees in any sector e.g., undergraduate pharmacists, preregistration pharmacists, foundation pharmacists pre-registration and post registration pharmacy technicians. It is also suitable for pharmacists who are supervising healthcare professionals achieving independent prescribing qualifications.

The module will provide students with the intellectual abilities and skills to:
- Ensure safe and effective patient care through educational supervision
- Ensure effective learning experiences and opportunities to achieve learning outcomes through educational supervision and provision of an effective learning environment
- Support trainees to identify learning needs and develop their portfolio of learning to aid progression through their educational programme
- Implement appropriate curricula, assessment and feedback strategies
- Engage with the implications of interprofessional and cross-disciplinary supervision
- Guide personal and professional development
- Ensure personal and professional development as educational supervisors
- Demonstrate educational governance and leadership
On completion of the module, students should be able to

Private study200 hours of private study inclusive of:
- 30 hours reading and other activities preparing for taught sessions;
- 90 hours post-unit follow up activities linked to their training plan;
- 50 hours researching and writing assessed assignments;
- 30 hours private reading.
60 hours support to facilitate independent learning will be given to the students through the University VLE (Minerva) which will provide additional reading, session hand-outs, power-point presentations and reading lists and enable group work to develop their learning needs analysis and training plans.
Opportunities for Formative FeedbackStudents will be asked to undertake a learning needs analysis and to identify knowledge, skills and attitudes required for this module, followed by the development of a learning plan. Tutors will provide formative feedback on students’ learning needs analysis and their development plan. This learning plan will be presented in group tutorial sessions and receive tutor and peer formative feedback and help inform the reflective case study assignment.
Students will undertake group presentations during the face to face sessions and receive tutor and peer formative feedback.

Students are not required to pass each assignment in order to pass the module but if they fail an assignment and averaged marks do not reach the module pass mark they can resubmit the assignment for a maximum mark of 50.
