Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to devise and carry out a research project using secondary sources, compile a suitable bibliography, locate and use relevant sources and construct an extended piece of historical writing.

Skills outcomes
Helps develop the following skills to advanced levels:

- defining and researching a complex problem
- locating and handling relevant material, whether secondary or primary sources
- self-discipline to work independently on a major self-directed project
- presenting findings in an extended written report conforming to academic norms.


Syllabus

Students will write a long essay of 6,000 words during the second semester. Students may select their own topic provided that a member of staff, normally from the School of History, is available to provide appropriate supervision.

The long essay will be derived from secondary sources. Primary sources may be used if available and appropriate, but they are not an essential requirement of the task.
