Module summary

Do you want to work more effectively with your colleagues and develop your own personal awareness? This module introduces you to counselling theories and skills and their application in a range of one-to-one situations likely to arise in working with learners, their families and colleagues. There is also the opportunity to reflect upon aspects of self that may enhance and hinder the application of personal awareness and competence influencing interactions with others

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- identify and examine a range of one-to-one situations likely to arise in working with learners, their families and colleagues etc;
- analyse counselling theory from a diversity of traditions and demonstrate appropriate use in working one-to-one;
- evaluate, apply and develop insight into strategies for effective problem solving, goal setting and action planning;
- explore the significance of cultural, social and psychological difference and ethical principles in one-to-one relating;
- reflect upon aspects of self that may enhance and hinder the application of personal awareness and competence influencing interactions with others.

Syllabus

- Consider critically situations that often occur when working with learners, families, colleagues etc. and assess appropriate roles to be undertaken and application of skills.
- constructs for understanding a range of behaviours linked with human distress, strategies for coping and the manner in which counselling skills can be applied as a means of effective intervention.
- Analyse and evaluate verbal and non-verbal communications and offer and make use of constructive, positive and critical feedback.
- Experiential activities and practice situations to develop a variety of skills relevant to support effective use of counselling skills in one-to-one situations.
- Exploration of ethical issues and cultural differences in expectation and manner of relating in professional settings based on the BACP ethical framework.
- Maintaining reflexive learning journal on perceptions of self and others' experiences within the group and the impact upon personal development in other environments, reflecting and sharing processes with a colleague.
