Module summary

This module outlines and evaluates a range of social, economic, and strategic issues concerning doing business in China. This module will help students develop the ability to make judgements and decisions on managing business operations in China.


The module aims to provide an introduction to the major strategic and operational issues facing multinational enterprises doing business in China.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to assess and evaluate:
- how China's recent economic and political history has shaped its business environment for local and foreign firms
- the advantages and disadvantages of exporting, licensing and foreign direct investment as market servicing strategies for China
- the political, economic, legal and social factors that will most impact on foreign business in China and to have insight as to how these are best managed

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
- utilise basic principles to interpret the management of international business in the Chinese context
- evaluate key features of the Chinese business environment and assess their implications for the development of businesses in China and other related economies

Skills outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
- work as an effective team player
- effectively solve in-depth problems and make advanced decisions

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
- critically analyse international business issues specific to China


Indicative content:

This module will examine:

- a selection of relevant current concepts and theories underpinning studies of Chinese Business, e.g.,
- challenges of doing business in China,
- Chinese business networks, innovation, marketing and supply chain aspects of managing business in China.

Students will have to complete an online assessment at the end of the module. This will take place during the examinations period and will be time bound. The assessment will not take 48 hours to complete, but students will have a 48 hour time period in which to complete it. The resit for this module will be 100% by examination.
