Module summary

The module employs concepts and modes of analysis from the social sciences to develop skills and knowledge in practical and theoretical issues in the study of organisations and their development. It adopts a critically informed perspective on OD, drawing upon complexity thinking in challenging conventional approaches to organisational change. It explores a number of perspectives that examine the ways in which employee attitudes, organisational structures, technologies, work processes, cultures and the relations of authority, power and conflict or co-operation that they engender may be linked to wider social factors influencing organisational processes, design and development.

Objectives

The module aims to develop the capacity to critically evaluate theory and evidence in Organisational Analysis, issues of Organisation Design and Organisation Development. It introduces the major elements of these three areas and explores the major debates and controversies within them, encouraging a critically informed approach to planned organisational change. The module content is designed to map onto the learning outcomes of the CIPD module 7ODD in order to allow the module to meet the requirements of CIPD accreditation.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

1. Historical development of ideas and practice in Organisation Design and Development in the context of wider environmental change (CIPD 1, 2)

2. Competing ideas around organisational analysis, design and development, and how these have evolved in the context of contributions to a range of individual, group and organisational outcomes (CIPD 4)

3. Critical engagement with competing perspectives on organisations and organisational change and how we conceptualise change – planned and emergent change (CIPD 1)

4. Complex change that is sensitive to organisational cultures, norms and behaviour, wider power relations and political contexts of change – radical approaches to OD and change. (CIPD 6)

5. Critical engagement with a variety of change management strategies and activities and their contribution to organisational effectiveness and performances, together with an appreciation of the role of HR in change initiatives (CIPD 4, 5, 7))
