Module summary

This module considers the ways in which individual, team and organizational factors effect employee behaviour at work; and it demonstrates how appreciating such factors can help people to design effective organizations. The module combines theory, research evidence and practitioner expertise to provide a rich account of these factors and outcomes. Specific factors/topics covered on the module include motivation, decision making, well-being, teamwork, leadership and work design. On completion of the module, students should possess a critical understanding of human behaviour in contemporary organizations, as well as a critical understanding of the conduct of research within the field of organizational psychology. The module comprises 10 teaching sessions, which include a combination of workshops and guided study. Ahead of each week’s workshop, students are provided with a workbook and pre-learning materials. Then, students attend a workshop where they will discuss and analyse key theories and research studies, and further consolidate their learning through applied case studies and group activities. Feedback will be provided through these workshop discussions, with further opportunities for students to plan and write mock essays to help prepare for their module assessment. The module is assessed through a written examination (100% of assessment).

Objectives

The aim of this module is to enable students to develop an evidenced-based understanding of individual, group and organisational-level issues relating to the psychology of human effectiveness/performance in contemporary organisations.

- the role of psychology in realising organisational effectiveness
- individual, team and organisational-level factors that influence employee behaviour
- theoretical approaches and processes to explain employee behaviour

Skills outcomes
The module will develop a range of skills, including oral communication and analytical skills, by group-based problem-solving tasks, analysis of case studies, and a multi-perspective approach to understanding events and effects.


Syllabus

The module provides an introduction to the discipline of organisational psychology, covering core topics within the field such as individual differences, work design and motivation, stress and well-being, team working, and leadership.

Private study

Class learning is supported by a range of online video and other resources accessed through Minerva. Students are also expected to further their understanding through reading. The module has a core set of readings and there will also be an annotated reading list of contemporary journal articles to deepen coverage of specific topics. The non-contact hours will comprise students’ private study and independent learning, including: subject matter readings, both prior to and during the module; preparation for the discussions and case studies; research and collaboration for group activities; independent research and preparation for the coursework assignment; and additional private study to further their own knowledge and understanding of the topics.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

1) Students will be offered formative feedback on activities and exercises undertaken in workshops.
2) Summative feedback will take the form of a final examination grade.
