Module summary

This is a module for the new Gateway to Medicine programme which will provide students with experience of healthcare and voluntary sector care provision. Students will have formal teaching alongside mentoring from members of the patient carer community and junior doctors. Throughout the module students will develop familiarity with the patient journey and how the health system works in the UK. Students will also improve their independent learning strategies through experiencing case-based learning.

The aims of this module are for students to:
1. To gain an understanding of the patient journey in the NHS
2. To develop communication skills
3. To develop appreciation of patient care and team roles within the context of the NHS and voluntary services

1. Appreciated at a basic level the nature of patient journeys and the daily practice of healthcare practitioners.
2. Developed communication skills with the patient carer community, health care professionals, students and academics in both informal and formal settings.
3. Gained an understanding of the NHS through research of multi-professional healthcare teams in practice settings.
4. Appreciated the role of voluntary services in healthcare.
5. Recognized the importance of exploring the patient and carer perspective in safe and high quality healthcare.

Syllabus

The module is deigned to introduce students participating in the widening participation programme to develop appropriate communication skills with a wide range of people likely to be encountered in healthcare and community settings. Taught content will support student in this task by focusing on the following:
• Professional practice in healthcare
• Overview of NHS structure and services
• Professional roles and responsibilities in healthcare
• The work of voluntary services in the community
• Principles of professional communication
• Patient and carer perspectives

Private study

Private study tasks relate to the content of the course and the preparation of the assessed pieces of coursework including the reflective portfolio. Students will use the experiences that have been gained from face to face contact sessions and support material will be available on Minerva.
The 3 hour workshop

Independent learning tasks are designed to provide students with an opportunity to develop their skills as independent learners.
The 3 hour workshop sessions will take the form of: 1 x pre-placement workshop; 1 x post-placement workshop; 6 x case study workshops. The 2 hour workshop sessions will take the form of: 3 x communication workshops

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students' engagement with the module and progress will be monitored on a continuous basis by module tutors assigned to groups based on feedback from members of the patient carer community, participation in group activities and through the reflections in the formative e-portfolio. Group tutors will provide regular feedback on the e-portfolio activities.
